Getting Started
Over the years we have worked with hundreds of cafes, and along the way we’ve picked up a few clues to what makes a place a success. Most of our staff have come from a hospitality background and are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to what works and what doesn’t. We are more than happy to advise on the design and ergonomics of the espresso area, margins, pricing and menu planning, and provide plumbing and electrical specifications.
In the first few weeks of operation you can look to us for support to get your coffee program running smoothly and bringing baristas up to speed.
Training
Having skilled competent baristas operating the machine is crucial to the success. Having someone unskilled and serving sub par coffee is the quickest way to destroy a café.
Our espresso training is tailored to the needs of café operators, and includes “introductory” training for beginners and focused training for more accomplished coffee makers.
Training is not a one off event – it’s an ongoing process – in successful cafes it’s embedded into the culture.
We have full training facilities at all three of our centers, where students can come and train and learn away from the pressure and complications of the work environment.
Technical support
Part of the service you will receive from Coffee Supreme is comprehensive technical support. To get the best flavour and value out of your coffee and into the cup you need machinery that’s clean and well looked after.
Our technical team monitor every machine we have in the field. They run scheduled preventative maintenance, which ensures machinery is running as it should and making coffee to a high standard. The technical team are available 7 days week for free phone support.
And because all our field staff are experienced espresso makers, they’ll notice coffee quality, solve problems on the spot, and advise your baristas of new techniques and any scope for improvement.
Planning to open a coffee business?
Our most important piece of free advice is: ”Go work for someone else in the café industry first!” Preferably for several people and see what it is really like day in and day out. Learn from them, and from their mistakes!
Romance and reality
Theres nothing better than being served beautiful coffee in a well run establishment. Whether it’s the coffee, service, food or the atmosphere and décor, the complete package is a hard formula to get right. Sometimes it’s a combination of them all, and those places are more often than not the successful ones.
The idea of running a café is very appealing – working creatively with coffee and food, creating a lively and engaging environment that interesting people want to make their regular haunt, being a good host – it all sounds like a pleasant and rewarding experience – and it can be, when everything is going well.
But what this Pollyanna picture leaves out is that running a café is damn hard work, requiring specialised hospitality skills, and it is very difficult to make decent money unless you get every detail dead right. In today’s crowded market, inexperienced café owners are struggling to make a profit at all, and many find themselves pinning all their financial hopes on getting a good sale price for their business.
All this said, there’s still opportunities and new ground to be broken. We love to talk about ideas, assist with planning, provide exceptional coffee and service, and get a kick from watching peoples visions become reality.
